How to e-file ITR-1 (Sahaj) online| For AY 2022-23

As, The last date for filing income tax returns for the FY 2021-22 & AY 2022-23 is July 31, 2022 and no further extension of due date is looking from Income tax department. So those taxpayers whose accounts don’t require to be audited left only 3 days to file their ITRs.
In this blog you will be learning ‘How to e-file ITR-1 (Sahaj) online’ in simple way and within 10 minutes.
Who should file ITR-1 (Sahaj)?
ITR-1 is applicable for a Resident (other than Not Ordinarily Resident) Individual having Total Income from any of the following sources up to ₹ 50 lakh.
- Salary / Pension
- One House Property
- Other sources (Interest, Family Pension, Dividend etc.)
- Agricultural Income up to ₹ 5,000
Who should not file ITR-1 (Sahaj)?
(a) If a person is Director in a company
(b) Holding any unlisted equity shares at any time during the previous year
(c) Have assets outside India (including financial interest in any entity)
(d) Have the authority to sign accounts located outside India
(e) Has any source of income from outside India
(f) The person whose tax is deducted u/s 194N
(g) is a person in whose case payment or deduction of tax has been deferred on ESOP
(h) who has any brought forward loss or loss to be carried forward under any head of income
What are the documents required to file ITR-1?
- Pan
- Aadhaar Number/Aadhaar Enrolment ID
- Form 26AS from Traces
- Form-16 issued by employer
Note: Most of the employees don’t have Form-16 but still they can file their return. Form 26AS is downloaded from Traces only for tally up what TDS is deducted and deposited by your employer.
Here is step by step guide to file ITR-1
Step-1
First of all, go to website: https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal , home window will display

On the Home page:
If you are a registered user, then enter your Pan number and click on ‘Continue’ then you will be asked to fill your password and click on ‘Login’ button.
If you have not registered then you can register yourself by simply providing Pan number, Aadhaar number, Address and bank details.
Step-2
After successful login a pop up window opens, now click on ‘File now’.

Step-3
Select Assessment year i.e. 2022-23 for FY 2021-22 and mode of filing ‘online’ then click on continue.

Step-4
Now select Individual and click on continue

Step-5
As we are filing ITR-1 so will select ITR-1 and proceed further.

Step-6

Step-7
A pop up window opens that require to fill the below details.
- Personal Information
- Gross Total Income
- Total Deduction
- Tax Paid
- Total Tax Liability

Step-8
1) Personal Information:
Personal Information requires the following details.
Nature of Employment:
Select nature of employment as per given options if not any of them then select ‘Others’
- Central Government
- State Government
- PSU
- CG Pensioners
- SG Pensioners
- PSU Pensioners
- Others Pensioners
- Others
Filing Section will be Filed u/s 139(1)
Select Old tax regime because it has more tax saving scheme
Then add your bank details. Mention all bank details you have in India during previous year but choose one for refund credit.

Step-9
2) Gross Total Income:
If you want any salary exemption then click yes otherwise click no.

Step-10
2) Gross Total Income:
If you have Form-16 issued by your employer then it will be auto reflected in gross salary head. Otherwise you need fill gross salary details manually.
There will be a standard deduction of Rs. 50,000 under section 16 (ia)


Step-11
3) Total Deduction:
Select your deduction as per below details


Step-12
4) Tax Paid
Verify this from your Form 26AS as deducted TDS and advance tax paid by you is reflected in form 26AS.

Step-13
5) Total Tax Liability
If any tax liability arises then pay the tax liability amount through e-payment or by generating challan.
Step-14
Before final submission once preview your filed form if there is any error then correct it then click on submit. You can verify your return through multiple methods as per your convenience.
